District Trials or Championships

A trial or championship event is held in each district in May for Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups.  Your DISTRICT will send out all the required information through your school sports teachers.

Avon Schools Championships

The Avon Schools Championships is usually held on the second Saturday in June (date dictated by UK Athletics), for Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups.  There are 100m, 800m, High Jump and Shot Putt events for Minors, and a full programme of events for all other ages.

Each District will select a track & field team based upon performances in their trials and/or championships.  If selected, you will represent your district at the Avon Schools County Championships.  Unless your district has a special vest then you should wear your school shirt/vest.

Please would seniors, who have previously been selected for the county and who have moved to a 6th form college, let the county team manager know of their whereabouts in order to receive an invitation to this event.

You will receive all of the information via your district.  On arrival at the venue you must report to your DISTRICT TEAM MANAGER.  There is an entry fee of £1 to be paid on the day in exchange for your number.

If you finish in the top three of your track final or field event you must report to the Avon Schools Team Managers Table (In covered area near the finish) to give contact and availability details for you to be considered for selection for the South West Schools Championships.

Standards

English Schools’ Athletic Association publishes a set of standards each year, which counties use to compare athletes of different events for selection;  See Track & Field | Current Standards on the English Schools’ Athletic Association website for a list of standards for all events.

South West Schools Championships

The South West Schools Championships is usually held on the Saturday following the Avon Schools Championships for Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups.

We try to take between 90 - 100 athletes across the 3 age groups for both boys and girls.  Selection is made immediately after the Avon Championships by the Team Managers.  Athletes are advised that they should have achieved or be within striking distances of County Standard, so first place does not always guarantee selection.

Selection is governed by a maximum number stipulated by the South West Schools Association. This number, however, is affected by the events we cannot fill.  If you are selected for the South West Schools Championships you will be representing AVON and will be required to wear county vest.

Teams selected will be announced on the front page of the Avon Schools web site.  No letters will be sent out.  Selected athletes should reply promptly using the links on the website, indicating travel intentions, kit requirements, parental consent and any medical conditions.

English Schools Championships

The English Schools Championships is held on the first or second Friday/Saturday in July, for Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups.

We are only allowed to select a team of 35 athletes in total to the English Schools Track and Field Championships.  The first to be put forward will be athletes that have achieved National Standard, then English Schools Standard, and then if there are any places left they are decided on merit and level of performance.  Team Managers keep a record of all athletes’ performances during the season and are submitted as an aid to selection.

If you are selected for English Schools you will be representing AVON and will be required to wear full county kit.

Teams selected will be announced on the front page of the Avon Schools web site.  No letters will be sent out.  Selected athletes should reply promptly using the links on the website, indicating travel intentions, kit requirements, parental consent and any medical conditions.

Intermediates finishing in the first 2 of their event at the English Schools Championships can be selected for the Home International, usually on the Saturday following English Schools.  If you are selected you will have to attend an international team meeting at the end of the English Schools Championships.
